CYC 809
Trauma-Informed Practice
This course builds on previous knowledge of therapeutic assessment and intervention and theoretical orientations to therapeutic relationships. In this course, trauma theory is examined within a developmental-ecological perspective. Students will explore the impact of trauma on child development, drawing on attachment, neurobiological, and socio-cultural components of trauma. The practical aspects of undertaking therapeutic care are examined including forming therapeutic relationships and the importance of trauma-informed life-space interventions. Emphasis will be placed on trauma-informed practice skills and strategies that have applicability to a wide variety of trauma contexts. Through experiential learning and case study applications students are provided opportunities to go beyond the theoretical and explore real-world complex situations using in-class simulations. This course considers trauma-informed practice at the individual, group, organization and community levels.
