ENG 101
Laughter and Tears: Comedy and Tragedy
Laughter and tears are not always straightforward. A tale of pride going before a fall can be reassuring to us as well as sad, and a Hollywood romantic comedy can encode a scathing social critique. Offering insight into our ongoing fascination with the extremes of human emotion, this course traces how the twin poles of the comic and tragic have developed through literary history, and how they vary across diverse cultural traditions.

Solid course with a great professor (Dr. Raby). We covered tragedies first, then comedies. The reading material ranged from Ancient Greek plays to contemporary short stories; no need to purchase anything as all of it was provided by the professor as digital readings.
Course consisted of weekly readings, weekly quizzes, an essay, and a take home exam. The two-hour lectures pertained to the previous week’s reading as well as providing deeper analysis and supplementary material. The one-hour writing workshops allowed us to refine essay-writing skills and to understand Dr. Raby’s expectations for our essay worth 35%—immensely helpful. Some creative writing workshops were also held, in which the prof gave us a prompt, we wrote down whatever came to mind, and we could volunteer to share our writing with the class.
Not a bird course in the sense that you need to put in consistent work to succeed, but that’s to be expected of most English electives. Dr. Raby himself is extremely understanding and accommodating of extenuating circumstances. I struggled with mental health throughout the semester and lacked official documentation, but he was gracious enough to allow me an extension regardless. Excellent course, excellent prof.
