ENG 222
Fairy Tales and Fantasies
Starting with the powerful images of folk tale, fairy tale, and legend, and following them through fantasies and animal tales, this course explores their evolution from oral stories for adults to literary versions for children. It will also examine the intellectual and historical influences of the periods. The material to be studied includes modern versions of the tales in print and visual media.

Keri Mareen and (C)ENG 222 is tough, but interesting if you actually care for the history of folk tales at all. Keri is one of those professors who will almost NEVER give A to A+s, and has completely unrealistic expectations of what an essay written by 1st year students should actually be held to as a standard. Prepare to do A LOT of reading, and probably get lower than an 80 for way more work than any other LLLS course. Were talking reading 20-40 page pdfs every week, 5000 word emails every single week where assignment instructions and tips are randomly hidden within, on top of the actual folk/fairy tale manditory reading material - which is all very specific versions so you WILL need to reread them to actually discuss their content. She seems very bitter, and complains about chatGPT so it hurts. Newsflash: the people using chatGPT definitely don't read OR care about these emails, please spare the rest of us! I loved the learning about oral story telling history and how social norms transformed folk tales as they were published in the 1700s BUT dropped the course because of how much time I was spending just to tank my GPA. If you love literature I would say this course is 'useful' in a sense of knowing the history of such influential cultural artifacts... but I do not recommend, and it is DEFINITELY NOT an easy A. Just pick up the Oxford Fairy Tale Companion guide by Jack Zipes if you're curious and skip this course.
