Franco. Lit. Middle East, N. Africa
This course, taught in English, presents francophone works from the post-colonial period in the Middle East and North Africa. Students will study fiction by major authors such as Driss Chraibi, Tahar Ben Jelloun, and Assia Djebar using a socio-historical approach. They will examine the impact of major upheavals from the Franco-Algerian War to the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Topics include cultural and linguistic hybridity, orientalism, religious diversity, gender and sexuality, trauma, exile and diaspora.
