HST 627
Transgender Histories
This course introduces students to the histories of transgender people, communities and organizations, and their interactions with medical, legal, and governmental authorities. The course trains students to use digital archival sources for research into transgender histories and to think critically about the contents and organization of archives. We examine how and why colonialism, racism and misogyny empowered North American and European concepts of gender to shape gender variant identities and lived experiences worldwide.
